'Significance of the Hungry Ghost Festival : HungZai Hungry Ghosts Story Contest'

The Hungry Ghosts festival occurs every 7th Lunar month in Singapore and it is more than than a colorful festival where songs, shows and auctions of every kind is carried out. It is believed that during this time, the gates to the netherworld open up so that the dead can once again roam this earth as they like. And it is for this reason that people wil avoid various activities from weddings, moving house and even swimming. It is better to be safe than sorry mah. This festival is unique that even with the passing of time and the advancement of technology it has not only not been forgotten but has grown from strength to strength. It shows that people in Singapore truly believe in this special month.

Personally, I remember as a child when I first saw this festivals I was really scared. Really. Remember that I was thinking to myself so scary that so many dead people will come back and I used to imagine shadows in the night that they were dead people coming back. Of course now that I am much older, I know that it is more a significance to remember our dead relatives and friends and of course the gates of the netherworld will not open during this time. but will it? There are many ghost stories that will arise at this time but is it a result of the people imagination or is it real? I suppose that we might never know..
